2003 New Year’s Resolutions
by Adam Reich
Like most of us, college hoops coaches everywhere have made their New Year’s resolutions for 2003. Here are just a few:
Dana Altman (Creighton):
To get a filing cabinet for all of the big-time job offers he is about to receive.
Jim Boeheim (Syracuse):
To start thinking of reasons why Carmelo Anthony should stay in school.
Mike Brey (Notre Dame):
To ask Gary Williams if he has any other players who want a change of scenery.
John Calipari (Memphis):
To open up a nightclub where his players can hang out and not get in trouble.
Jim Calhoun (Connecticut):
To get over the fact that the women’s basketball team is the most popular squad on campus.
Mike Davis (Indiana):
To stop doing Bobby Knight impressions.
Mark Few (Gonzaga):
To stop writing letters of protest to the NCAA selection committee.
Bob Huggins (Cincinnati):
To let his assistant coaches yell at the players for him.
Tom Izzo (Michigan State):
To convince himself that it is acceptable to recruit players outside the state of Michigan.
Ernie Kent (Oregon):
To focus recruiting efforts on players named Luke.
Bobby Knight (Texas Tech):
To donate all of his old Indiana sweaters to the Salvation Army.
Mike Krzyzewski (Duke):
To finally get cracking on his Hall of Fame induction speech.
Jim O’Brien (Ohio State):
To find a way to use OSU’s Fiesta Bowl victory as inspiration for his team.
Lute Olson (Arizona):
To make early hotel reservations in New Orleans for the first week in April.
Rick Pitino (Louisville):
To end all thoughts about returning to the NBA.
Kelvin Sampson (Oklahoma):
To graduate more players than the football team.
Al Skinner (Boston College):
To start recruiting kids who like to play defense.
