Fantasy Guards

Fantasy Guards: Stronger is Better

by Rick Young

In fantasy play, the perfect guard is not necessarily what you think of. Most teams want a point guard who distributes the ball and can score when necessary, and a shooting guard who can fill it up from downtown. In fantasy, it’s a mixture of both. At the beginning of the season, Ricky Minard and Henry Domercant were ranked one and two. At the mid-point, Domercant is still a strong player, while Minard hasn’t been a bust, but not nearly the player he was as a sophomore. Conference play is starting, which should help Minard, Domercant and the rest of the smaller conference players heat it up!

Top 10 Pre-Conference Guards:

1. Henry Domercant, Senior – Eastern Illinois
2. Dwyane Wade, Sophomore – 22nd Ranked Marquette
3. Andre Emmett, – Junior – Texas Tech
4. Luke Jackson, Junior – 19th Ranked Oregon
5. Ben Gordon, Sophomore – 6th Ranked Connecticut
6. Marquis Green, Junior – St. Bonaventure
7. Luis Flores, Senior – Manhattan
8. Troy Bell, Senior – Boston College
9. Jarvis Hayes, Junior – 21st Ranked Georgia
10. Ricky Minard, Junior – Morehead State

High percentage, good rebounding guards are great; but the key is scoring. Someone like Domercant will only average one or two points more than his scoring average in fantasy play because he takes a lot of shots and is an average rebounder. Dwyane Wade is a non-prototype guard, in that he is more like a small forward. He shoots a very high percentage and rebounds well, but he’s not likely to have those major scoring outburst like Domercant due to the structure of his team.

Next article will be out shortly, studying the center position.

Good luck this week and with your fantasy season!
