The Skinny:

Darko Milicic could eventually be the entire package. He can shoot, he can rebound, he can block shots, he’s getting tougher – and best of all, he’s only turning 18. While comparisons to Kevin Garnett are probably crazy, Milicic does have the potential to be something special. At 7-1, Milicic runs the floor like a guard, yet commands the presence of a center – although his likely NBA position will be power forward. He can post up, but also has the ability to face the basket, either shooting the spot-up jumper or making something happen off the dribble. Like most European players, he will need to get stronger and learn the American way of playing defense, but the skill set is there.

The last time Milicic was in the United States, it was for the Global Games in Dallas in the summer of 2002. He impressed with his play there, and hopes to do so for whoever chooses him in this year’s draft — which is more and more looking like the Detroit Pistons at #2. While he won’t put up as big numbers as LeBron James or Camelo Anthony right away, it will be interesting to see what his impact will be in say four year’s time.

The second biggest smile on lottery selection night had to have been on the face of Pistons VP Joe Dumars. The Pistons trade away an aging Otis Thorpe and get this? Milicic has been compared to Kevin Garnett and quite honestly it might not be out of the realm of possibility. He’s tall, he’s skilled, he’s getting tougher, and best of all — he’s only 18 (on draft night).
