First Round Recap – Atlanta Region
(4) Cincinnati 80, (13) East Tennessee State 77
Tony Bobbitt hit a three with 16.1 seconds remaining in the game to help the Bearcats squeeze past the upset-minded Buccaneers in Columbus, Ohio. ETSU had a chance to tie the game, but their chances were foiled as the buzzer went off. It was the second year in a row that ETSU’s NCAA Tournament game went down to the wire. Last year, against Wake Forest, the Buccaneers had a chance to steal the game on a three-pointer at the buzzer, but fell short.
Tim Smith had a game-high 26 points to lead three players in double figures for ETSU. While, Field Williams led the Bearcats with 19 points to also lead three players in double figures. Cincinnati will now play Illinois on Sunday for a chance to go to the Sweet 16 in Atlanta.
