Martin Roasts Cincy: When sponsors planned the roast of former Cincinnati coach Bob Huggins, they intended the evening to be a thank you for the recently deposed coach. School officials forced out Huggins because they no longer wanted to deal with the controversy that tended to surround Huggins, his staff and his players. But not everyone agreed with Cincinnati’s position, especially former Bearcat and current Denver Nugget Kenyon Martin. At the roast, he denounced Cincinnati’s decision, then renounced his affiliation with the school. He said he wanted his jersey un-retired and his name removed from his old locker and trophies.
Many fans shared Martin’s angst, booing university president Nancy Zimpher whenever someone mentioned her name. Some of the big names who appeared at the roast included Louisville coach Rick Pitino, Kentucky coach Tubby Smith, Memphis coach John Calipari, Michael Jordan and Dick Vitale. [10/01/05]
