Younger Knight Is Red Raiders’ Heir Apparent: Texas Tech officials have approved Pat Knight, coach Bob Knight’s son and an assistant coach, as the Red Raiders’ replacement for the elder Knight, whenever he decides to retire. Bob Knight is entering his 40th season as a coach and trails Dean Smith by 25 wins on the career Division I win list. His son has been an assistant for six seasons and coached the Wisconsin Blast of the International Basketball Association for one season. He lacks much experience as a head coach, but school officials consider him an up-and-coming assistant coach. They definitely are gambling that pedigree counts for something in coaching. [10/01/05]
