Oliver Becomes First Coaching Casualty: Idaho State coach Doug Oliver is the first coach to plan to leave or lose a job this season because of poor performance. Oliver announced that he will resign as coach at the end of the season, citing a desire for fresh blood to reinvigorate the program. He added that he announced his resignation now so that his players don’t need to play with additional pressure on them. Of course, that added pressure would be the desire to win to save their coach’s job. The Bengals’ athletic director said the timing of Oliver’s resignation means that the school will hire a replacement by the end of the season who will start once Oliver steps down. In eight seasons at Idaho State, Oliver compiled an 82-128 record. The Bengals are 7-8 this season and 0-4 in Big Sky Conference play. [1/18/06]
