Purdue: Painter Removes Spates

Painter Removes Spates: Purdue coach Matt Painter has cut ties with freshman Korey Spates, dismissing the guard from the team. He had suspended Spates for six days before the season for violating team policies. Painter said the dismissal was the result of an accumulation of conduct detrimental to the team. He did not offer details about those actions. Spates averages 10.1 points and 2.5 rebounds per game. He becomes the fourth of the Boilermakers’ top five scorers to miss time. Leading scorer Carl Landry and third-leading scorer Nate Minnoy are out with injuries. Purdue has struggled much of this season, and Spates’ absence won’t Painter’s job in his first season any easier. [1/24/06]
