Sutton to Have Surgery: Oklahoma State coach Eddie Sutton will have surgery today to try to fix back and hip problems. Sutton has chronic pain in his back caused by advanced lumbar degenerative disc disease. That basically means the discs in Sutton’s spine are slowly disintegrating. Sutton is on a medical leave, which he took to treat an alcohol problem that became public last week after he crashed into another car with a .22 blood alcohol content level. Sutton said he struggles with alcohol, and he has had the problem in the past.
Sutton could return to coach the Cowboys next season. But most observers believe this season is his last. His son Sean, an assistant coach, has taken over head coaching duties. Sutton named Sean to be the heir to his coaching legacy at Oklahoma State. [2/23/06]
