Rutgers: Waters Resigns at Rutgers

Waters Resigns at Rutgers: Rutgers coach Gary Waters has resigned, effective at the end of this season. He and school officials negotiated a buyout of Waters’ contract for $550,000. Although Waters said the school did not force him to resign, officials expressed disapproval with the team’s performance. The Scarlet Knights have had an up and down season, with wins against Seton Hall and Marquette but home losses to St. John’s and Providence. Rutgers sits at 16-12 and 6-9 in the conference and will likely qualify for the Big East Conference Tournament. But school officials apparently expected more signs of improvement under Waters.

The school also wasn’t happy when Waters missed the team’s game against Marquette because he was at Kent State for a ceremony to honor his team’s run to the Elite Eight. He could not get back to New Jersey in time for the Scarlet Knights’ game because of a snowstorm. [3/1/06]
