Southern Conference: Southern Conference Tournament

Championship Week 2006
Southern Conference Tournament: No. 11 Citadel proved why conference tournaments are so special by beating No. 6 Furman 65-53. The Bulldogs had won just one game in conference play and only one Division I game against a team not named Savannah State since November. But 18 points from junior swingman J’mel Everhart and an awful 30 percent shooting night from the Paladins were enough to propel Citadel into the quarterfinals against No. 3 Davidson.

No. 8 Appalachian State survived No. 9 Wofford 66-65 to set up a quarterfinal game against No. 1 Georgia Southern Friday thanks to sophomore forward Jeremy Clayton’s floater with two seconds remaining. Clayton grabbed his 10th rebound off a missed shot by junior guard D.J. Thompson who led the Mountaineers with 20 points. Clayton’s winning bucket gave him 17 points for the game. Wofford had rallied to take a 65-64 lead in the final minute after trailing by 10 midway through the second half.

Sophomore forward Kyle Hines had a sensational game with 26 points and 10 rebounds to lead No. 10 UNC – Greensboro to a 69-66 victory against No. 7 Western Carolina. The Spartans used a 17-2 run in the second half to take a 10-point lead, then kept the Catamounts at bay down the stretch to move on to the quarterfinals to play No. 2 Elon Friday.
