Not a Ringing Endorsement: UNC coaching legend Dean Smith has asked a candidate in the North Carolina Supreme Court race to remove a quote from campaign material that implies Smith’s endorsement. Attorney Rachel Lea Hunter is using a quote “As a loyal Democrat to another loyal Democrat. Win Rachel! Win!” with a photo of her and Smith, from last month’s North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame banquet. Smith, who doesn’t recall meeting Hunter, has stated that he will vote in the election, but had not reached a decision on a candidate. Hunter is seeking an eight-year term on the state’s high court in the nonpartisan race. [6/09/06]
