South Carolina Athletics Expect Major Economic Hit: South Carolina’s athletic department expects more than $5 million in losses during the current and previous fiscal years. The school reported losing $2.655 million in 2004-05 and predicts $2.46 million in losses for the 2005-06 fiscal year, which ends June 30. The losses diminish a surplus built by former athletic director Mike McGee that reached $7.046 million after the 2003-04 fiscal year, when revenues exceeded costs by nearly $500,000. The current athletic director said he expected to be back in the black next year, but it is too early to give any figures. [6/20/06]
