Cornell: Cornell Athletics in Mourning

Cornell Athletics in Mourning: The Cornell basketball family lost a member when 83-year-old school Hall of Famer Robert Gallagher died. Gallagher played basketball for the Big Red in the 1940s, and the school inducted him into its Hall of Fame in 1998. He left the university to join the Navy but later returned to earn his last varsity letter in 1947. He was the team’s captain that season and led the team to a second-place finish in the Eastern Intercollegiate League. After graduation, Gallagher stayed active in the athletics department, serving as chairman of the Cornell Athletics Alumni Advisory Committee. Cornell scheduled its season-opener at Northwestern largely to let Gallagher see the team he diligently followed for six decades. [9/02/06]
