Winona Beats Gophers: That headline might conjure thoughts of a certain beleaguered actress committing animal abuse. Minnesota fans would probably prefer that to the outcome of last night’s exhibition game against Winona State — an embarrassing 69-64 defeat. Winona State is the defending Division II championship squad, and the team returns four starters while the Gophers are young and inexperienced. But Division I teams — and especially their fans and boosters — never want to lose to a lower-division program. Minnesota struggled in the paint, letting the Warriors win the rebounding battle 40-27. In addition to losing the game, Minnesota fans allowed the Winona State fans to fill the Gophers’ arena. About half of the 10,000-plus fans were in a Warrior frenzy from start to finish. [11/09/06]
