NCAA: Naismith Artifacts Draw Nearly $300K

Naismith Artifacts Draw Nearly $300K: A detailed account of the first basketball game played in December 1891 sold for $71,700 Friday in the first of two auctions of historical items belonging to the sport’s founder, James Naismith. “The eight-page manuscript describing the events of the first game in Springfield, Mass., is the most significant basketball document ever to reach the auction block,” said Chris Ivy, conductor of the auction. Thirty-three items, including a typed copy of the original rules of basketball and a vintage 1890s photograph of the first basketball court at Springfield College, sold for $293,972. Nearly 300 more items from Naismith’s collection will part of a second auction Dec. 15. [12/10/06]
