White Men Run the NCAA: According to a study by the University of Central Florida’s Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sports, white men still dominate most leadership position in the NCAA, and women and minorities are making slow progress. All 36 Division I conference commissioners are white, not counting the commissioners of historically black conferences. An all-time high of 25.2 percent of basketball coaches are black. But that pales in comparison to the 57.8 percent of players who are black. Football and women’s basketball show worse gaps, and 94.1 percent of university presidents are white. [12/14/06]
