Louisville: Former Louisville Star Dies

Former Louisville Star Dies: Louisville’s first All-American and all-time leader in rebounds, Charlie Tyra, died at the Franciscan Health Care Center in Louisville, Ky. He had been diagnosed with congestive heart failure, according to his son. He was 71. Tyra was the most valuable player in the 1956 National Invitation Tournament, in which he averaged 24 points and 18 rebounds as Louisville swept to the title. He made All-America that season and again the following year. Tyra’s NBA career most notably saw him play for the New York Knicks. His No. 8 college jersey is one of only four that the Cardinals have retired. [1/03/07]
