Confederate Pride Won’t Bar Schools from Championships: An NCAA committee decided yesterday that South Carolina and Mississippi schools will not be sanctioned for their states’ decision to display the Confederate flag on their grounds. Despite a petition by the black coaches association, the states’ schools won’t be punished because “they do not have control over the placement of the Confederate flag,” said committee chairman Robert Vowels Jr. No NCAA campus displays the flag in either state. Supporters of the flag say it honors Confederate heritage and respects those who died in the Civil War. Its detractors view it to be a symbol of racism and hatred. [1/24/07]
