Illinois: More Trouble Surrounding Illinois Mascot

More Trouble Surrounding Illinois Mascot: Illinois has dealt with controversy surrounding its mascot Chief Illiniwek for years. The Oglala Sioux Tribe is now demanding that the original costume of the mascot be returned. Illinois purchased the attire in 1982 from Sioux Chief Frank Fools Crow but has since replaced the costume’s eagle feathers with turkey feathers. The Sioux believe that Fools Crow was disappointed by the school’s use of the attire, and his family wants it returned. The problem? University officials are unsure if they still have the original eagle feathers and are now searching for their possible whereabouts. [1/25/07]
