Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament Opening Round: No. 8 Canisius ended the dismal season of No. 9 St. Peter’s with a 62-48 victory in the opening round of the MAAC Tournament. Senior forward Darnell Wilson led the Golden Griffins with 19 points and eight rebounds. Canisius will play No. 1 Marist in the quarterfinals Saturday. St. Peter’s ends the season with a 5-25 record.
As badly as St. Peter’s wanted to forget its season, No. 10 Iona’s misery was even worse. The last Division I team to win a game, Iona mercifully finished its 2-28 season with a loss to No. 7 Rider 77-62. Ironically, Rider is one of the two teams that Iona managed to beat this season, in which the Gaels posted the fewest wins in program history. Jason Thompson led the Broncs with 24 points and 16 rebounds to push Rider into the quarterfinals against No. 2 Marist. [3/02/07]
