Texas: Durant Wins AP Player of the Year

Durant Wins AP Player of the Year: Texas’ Kevin Durant was chosen as the Associated Press’ college basketball player of the year, the first freshman and first Longhorn to receive the honor. The 6-9 Durant was fourth in scoring (25.8 points per game) and rebounding ( 11.1 per game) this season while leading the Longhorns to a 25-10 record and a victory in the first round of the NCAA tournament. He was also the Big 12 and freshman player of the year while shooting 47 percent from the floor, 40 percent from three-point range and 82 percent from the free-throw line. Durant, who succeeds J.J. Redick of Duke as the award’s recipient, received all but two votes from the 72-member panel. Those votes went to senior forward Alando Tucker of Wisconsin. [4/01/07]
