Ohio State: Ohio State Must Pay O’Brien

Ohio State Must Pay O’Brien: Former Ohio State coach Jim O’Brien hasn’t coached the Buckeyes to a single victory since 2004, but he’ll soon be receiving $2.5 million from the school. An appeals court ruled that the university must pay O’Brien for wrongfully firing the coach in 2004. In 1998, O’Brien gave money to the mother of a recruit to deal with family issues and then covered it up for years. The player never attended Ohio State, but the act violated the NCAA’s ethical conduct. The university acted swiftly but illegally in removing O’Brien, and it now must pay the former coach for breaching his contract. The appeals court didn’t grant O’Brien a total victory — he sought an additional $1.3 million in damages. [9/21/07]
