D-II Officials Suspended for Altering Game Outcome: The South Atlantic Conference of Division II has suspended three officials and banned them from working in postseason games after they incorrectly counted a basket for Wingate in the school’s 83-82 victory against Carson-Newman Wednesday. One of the officials counted two points for Wingate when Bryan Grier drove toward the basket and was fouled by Zach Hyatte. Carson-Newman players and coaches protested the call, but none of the officials or the official scorer could confirm or deny that the ball went in the basket. That score cut a five-point deficit to three. The conference has not determined the length of the officials’ suspensions. According to NCAA rules, outcomes are final even if it is later determined that a basket should not have counted. [1/19/08]
