Arkansas State Retires Indian Mascot: At the Indians’ final game of the season against Louisiana-Monroe, Arkansas State honored current and former students who donned the Indian mascot apparel to energize the team’s fans. Three students take turns dressing as the mascot at athletic events and other university functions. But the school has to change its mascot and nickname after the NCAA deemed the Indians to be a hostile or abusive nickname. The NCAA is cracking down on ethnically or racially insensitive nicknames, especially ones that target American Indians. Arkansas State will be the Wolves or Red Wolves next season. If they had ignored the NCAA’s ruling, the university would be ineligible to host any championship events in the post-season. [3/01/08]
