Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament Quarterfinals: No. 2 Mississippi Valley State and No. 7 Grambling State both shot better than 50 percent from the field, but the Delta Devils held off the Tigers for a 79-73 win the quarterfinals. Junior forward Eric Petty led Mississippi Valley State with 19 points, one of five players to reach double figures in scoring for the Delta Devils.
No. 1 Alabama State remained the favorite to win the SWAC championship by beating No. 8 Texas Southern 67-49. The Hornets had three players reach double figures in scoring, led by junior guard Andrew Hayles and freshman forward Roland Fitch with 14 points. None of Texas Southern’s players reached double figures. The Tigers shot 26.6 percent from the field. Alabama State would have won by much more if the Hornets had hit more free throws — they were 5-of-17 from the free throw line. [3/12/08]
