Big Ten: Big Ten Conference Tournament Opening Round

Championship Week 2006
Big Ten Conference Tournament Opening Round: No. 9 Michigan won an ugly game against No. 8 Iowa 55-47 as both teams shot terribly from the field. The Wolverines built a 14-point lead before going scoreless for 10 minutes in the second half. But Iowa managed to score only six points during that stretch, and the Wolverines held off the Hawkeyes down the stretch. Michigan will play No. 1 Wisconsin in the quarterfinals.

No. 10 Illinois got a layup from junior guard Chester Frazier with 3.8 seconds remaining to give the Illini a 64-63 win against No. 7 Penn State. The Illini nearly blew a 10-point second-half lead before Frazier bailed them out. The Illini advance to play No. 2 Purdue.

No. 6 Minnesota used a 21-8 run in the first eight minutes after halftime to erase a 13-point deficit, and the Golden Gophers held on for a 55-52 win against No. 11 Northwestern. Sophomore guard Lawrence Westbrook delivered his best performance of the season for the Golden Gophers when they needed it most. Minnesota overcame a hot start by Northwestern, which held the Gophers without a point for nearly five minutes in the first half. [3/13/08]
