California, Michigan State, San Francisco: Basketball Legend Pete Newell Dies

Basketball Legend Pete Newell Dies: Former California, Michigan State and San Francisco coach Pete Newell, 93, died Nov. 17. Newell affected the lives of many of basketball’s most celebrated coaches and players, including Bob Knight, Jerry West, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bill Walton and Shaquille O’Neal. Newell coached in college basketball from 1946 through 1960, when doctors advised him to retire. Newell earned a reputation for being emotionally high strung. His teams usually fared well — San Francisco won the NIT championship in 1949, and Cal won the NCAA championship in 1959. After coaching, Newell created a camp for big men. He also worked with several NBA teams as a scout or adviser. [11/18/08]
