Conference Notes

Northeast: 3 Top Seeds Defend Home Court

(1) Robert Morris 73, (8) St. Francis, NY 60

No. 1 Robert Morris avenged its only home conference loss by taking out No. 8 St. Francis, N.Y., 73-60 in the quarterfinals of the Northeast Conference Tournament. The Colonials held St. Francis to 25 percent shooting from the field in the first half, including no field goals inside the three-point line. Senior guard Jeremy Chappell led Robert Morris with 19 points. The Colonials will host No. 5 Quinnipiac Sunday. Robert Morris won both regular-season meetings.

(2) Mount St. Mary’s 72, (7) Wagner 62

No. 2 Mount St. Mary’s got enough scoring from sophomore guard Jean Cajou to overcome a 39 percent shooting effort in the Mountaineers’ 72-62 win against No. 7 Wagner. The Mountaineers’ defense also forced 16 turnovers and limited the Seahawks to seven offensive rebounds to help make up for their shooting struggles on offense. The Mountaineers will host No. 3 Sacred Heart, a team they beat at home 78-67 in January.

(3) Sacred Heart 76, (6) Central Connecticut State 64

No. 3 Sacred Heart completed a season sweep of No. 6 Central Connecticut State with a 76-64 quarterfinal victory. Junior guard Chauncey Hardy led the Pioneers with 22 points, and senior forward Joey Henley registered 15 points and 11 rebounds.

(5) Quinnipiac 86, (4) Long Island 78

Freshman forward Julian Boyd drained his first three-point attempt of the entire season for No. 4 Long Island to force overtime against No. 5 Quinnipiac, but the Bobcats prevailed 86-78 after the extra session. Junior guard James Feldeine played all 45 minutes for Quinnipiac and led the team with 22 points. Long Island couldn’t stop sophomore forward Justin Rutty, who had 18 points and 16 rebounds, including seven at the offensive end.
