Winthrop: Like Winthrop’s Season, Team Bus Goes Up in Smoke

Perennial Big South contender Winthrop struggled this season, finishing 11-19 after losing at UNC-Asheville in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament. The icing on the cake occurred when the team’s bus caught fire after the loss to the Bulldogs, delaying the team’s journey back to Rock Hill, S.C., while the team found a new bus, according to the the Herald, of Rock Hill.

“Alan Blue, who owns and drives the bus, left the Justice Center with about five minutes left to warm up the bus. The heater apparently caught fire and ignited a fuel line. He attempted to put out the fire with an extinguisher, but had to call 911. The Asheville Fire Department responded quickly and put out the fire with extinguishers.”
