Conference Notes

Colonial: Defense on Display at CAA Quarterfinals

(1) VCU 61, (8) Georgia State 52

Senior guard Eric Maynor had 18 points and hit 3-of-4 three-pointers to guide No. 1 VCU to a 61-52 win against No. 8 Georgia State. The Panthers shot only 35 percent from the field, despite the efforts of junior guard Joe Dukes, who scored 24 points for Georgia State. The Rams will play No. 4 Old Dominion, which handed VCU one of its four conference losses during the regular season.

(4) Old Dominion 52, (5) Hofstra 51

No. 4 Old Dominion survived a 37 percent shooting day and 11 missed free throws thanks to sophomore guard Darius James, who hit two free throws with 20 seconds remaining — his only points in the game. He capped the dominant performance of junior forward Gerald Lee, who finished with a game-high 30 points. Lee outdueled the Pride’s Charles Jenkins. The sophomore guard led Hofstra with 27 points. Lee and Jenkins were the only players from either team to reach double figures in scoring.

(2) George Mason 61, (7) James Madison 53

No. 2 George Mason beat No. 7 James Madison 61-53 in a game filled with poor shooting and solid defense. The Patriots won even though they shot only 37 percent from the field — largely because their defense held James Madison to 27 percent shooting. The Patriots had eight blocks in the game, including four from freshman Michael Morrison. Senior forward Darryl Monroe and sophomore guard Cam Long each scored 12 points to lead George Mason.

(11) Towson 58, (3) Northeastern 54

No. 11 Towson is the darling of the CAA Tournament after pulling off its second consecutive upset. The Tigers beat No. 3 Northeastern 58-54 to move into the semifinals against George Mason. Senior forward Junior Hairston led Towson with 14 points.
