West Coast: Toreros and Waves Win Tight Games

(5) San Diego 62, (8) Loyola Marymount 56

No. 5 San Diego overcame 20 turnovers against No. 8 Loyola Marymount to win 62-56. The Toreros benefited from the Lions’ dismal free throw shooting, as they made only 13-of-28 attempts. San Diego also dominated the boards, grabbing 35 rebounds to Loyola Marymount’s 16. Senior forward Gyno Pomare led the team with 18 points and eight rebounds. The Toreros will play No. 4 Santa Clara, which San Diego beat on the road by five and lost at home by two.

(6) Pepperdine 93, (7) San Francisco 85

No. 6 Pepperdine won a late-night thriller against No. 7 San Francisco 93-85. Senior guard Mike Hornbuckle led the Waves with 25 points, helping the team overcome 17 lead changes. Pepperdine’s largest lead was the winning margin. Both teams played well, combining for only 11 turnovers. They each hit at least seven three-pionters and grabbed at least 12 offensive rebounds. Junior forward Dior Lowhorn scored 32 points in the loss for the Dons. Pepperdine will play No. 3 Portland. The Pilots won both regular-season match ups.
