Atlantic 10: St. Louis Provides Only Opening-Round Drama

(9) St. Louis 62, (8) La Salle 60

Freshman guard Kwamain Mitchell hit the game winner at the buzzer to give No. 9 St. Louis a 62-60 win against No. 8 La Salle. Mitchell finished with 18 points to lead the Billikens. St. Louis will play No. 1 Xavier Thursday.

(5) Saint Joseph’s 72, (12) Charlotte 62

No. 5 Saint Joseph’s outscored the No. 12 49ers 49-32 in the second half to rally for a 72-62 win. Senior guard Tasheed Carr helped spark the comeback with 22 points in the game. Senior forward Ahmad Nivins had 19 points and 10 rebounds, going toe-to-toe with Charlotte senior forward Lamont Mack, who had 19 points and 10 rebounds. Saint Joseph’s will play No. 4 Temple, which swept the regular-season games against the Hawks.

(7) Duquesne 91, (10) Massachusetts 81

No. 10 Massachusetts kept up with No. 7 Duquesne for much of the game, but the Dukes pulled away in the second half for a 91-81 win. The Dukes finished with 51 percent shooting, and they sank 11 three-pointers. Freshman guard Melquan Bolding was 3-of-3 from three-point range and finished with a team-high 23 points. Duquesne will play No. 2 Rhode Island in the quarterfinals. The Dukes lost by only two points to the Rams March 1.

(6) Richmond 65, (11) St. Bonaventure 49

No. 6 Richmond forced 18 turnovers and held the No. 11 Bonnies to 39 percent shooting to squeeze out a 65-49 win in the opening round. Fresh off a 29-point performance in last weekend’s upset of Xavier, sophomore guard Kevin Anderson led the Spiders with 22 points. However, he did not shoot well, making only 39 percent of his attempts and only 3-of-6 free throw attempts. Richmond needs Anderson to find his stroke against No. 3 Dayton Thursday. The Flyers beat Richmond by six in mid-February.
