Big 12: Singletary’s 43 points highlights Opening Round

(9) Baylor 65, (8) Nebraska 49

Looking to revive a disappointing season, No. 9 Baylor whacked No. 8 Nebraska 65-49 in the opening round of the Big 12 Tournament. Senior guard Curtis Jerrells led the Bears with 19 points, and senior forward Kevin Rogers single-handedly out-rebounded the Cornhuskers with 10 points and 20 rebounds. Nebraska lost the battle of the boards 41-17. The Cornhuskers provided plenty of rebounding opportunities by shooting 32 percent from the field.

(5) Texas 67, (12) Colorado 56

Senior guard A.J. Abrams provided more defensive support than offensive domination in No. 5 Texas’ 67-56 win against No. 12 Colorado. Abrams had five steals to go with 10 points and four rebounds. He took only six shots in the game as the Longhorns pounded the Buffaloes inside with junior center Dexter Pittman and junior forward Damion James. Pittman had 26 points and 10 rebounds, and James added 11 points and 11 rebounds.

(7) Oklahoma State 81, (10) Iowa State 67

No. 10 Iowa State appeared poised to contend for a major upset, but No. 7 Oklahoma State clamped down on defense in the second half to win 81-67. The Cowboys committed only five turnovers and collected all but two defensive rebounds to limit the offensive chances for the Cyclones. On offense, sophomore forward Marshall Moses led the way with 18 points. The Cowboys advance to play No. 2 Oklahoma Thursday. The Sooners beat the Cowboys by four last weekend.

(11) Texas Tech 88, (6) Texas A&M 83

No. 11 Texas Tech sophomore forward Mike Singletary had one of the most dominating performances of the season in taking over the second half in the Red Raiders’ 88-83 upset of No. 6 Texas A&M. Down by 14 with 13 minutes to go, Singletary went to work, scoring 33 of Texas Tech’s next 37 points. His last made shot came with 44 seconds to go and gave the Red Raiders a 79-78 lead. His teammates helped him at the free throw line down the stretch, as Texas Tech made nine free throws in the final 30 seconds to hold off the Aggies. Texas Tech will play No. 3 Missouri. The Tigers beat Texas Tech by 11 at home in January.
