MEAC: Free Throws Dictated Success for Norfolk State and Coppin State

(3) Norfolk State 63, (6) Bethune-Cookman 58

No. 3 Norfolk State made just enough free throws to get past No. 6 Bethune-Cookman 63-58. The Spartans were only 22-of-44 from the foul line, but the sheer quantity was more than the Wildcats could overcome. Bethune-Cookman didn’t help its cause much on offense, shooting only 34 percent from the field. Senior guard Corey Lyons led Norfolk State with 28 points. The Spartans will play No. 2 South Carolina State Friday. The teams each won on the other’s home court in the regular season.

(5) Coppin State 66, (4) North Carolina A&T 63

No. 5 Coppin State took advantage of No. 4 North Carolina A&T’s struggles at the free throw line to escape with a 66-63 win. The Aggies made only 5-of-10 free throw attempts while the Eagles were 14-of-17. Coppin State made fewer mistakes in the game, committing only eight turnovers to the Aggies’ 19, which helped them overcome a poor effort on the glass. North Carolina A&T grabbed 20 offensive rebounds but still couldn’t muster enough offense to get past Coppin State, which will play No. 1 Morgan State in the semifinals.
