Conference Notes

Mountain West: Utah Survives Horned Frogs; San Diego State and BYU Roll

(1) BYU 80, (9) Air Force 69

After failing to win a Mountain West game during the regular season, No. 9 Air Force appeared poised to win its second in two days before faltering in the second half in an 80-69 loss to No. 1 BYU. The Cougars’ consistency proved too great for Air Force’s mediocre offense. The Falcons’ shot 40 percent from the field. Sophomore guard Jimmer Fredette led the Cougars with 21 points.

(4) San Diego State 71, (5) UNLV 57

No. 4 San Diego State led No. 5 UNLV for nearly the entire game in a 71-57 win, the third victory for the Aztecs against UNLV this season. The win should make it difficult for the selection committee to take UNLV ahead of San Diego State even though the Rebels have better non-conference wins. Senior forward Lorrenzo Wade led the Aztecs with 20 points and 10 rebounds. San Diego State won with efficient offense that led to 50 percent shooting and 8-of-15 shooting from beyond the arc. San Diego State will play BYU, which swept San Diego State in the regular season.

(2) Utah 61, (7) TCU 58

Senior guard Lawrence Borha drained a three-pointer with less than a second remaining to give No. 2 Utah a 61-58 win against No. 7 TCU. Borha finished with 10 points and seven rebounds, and senior forward Shaun Green led the Utes with 14 points. TCU played its best game in weeks, but the Horned Frogs couldn’t hit enough shots to pull off the upset.

(6) Wyoming 75, (3) New Mexico 67

No. 3 New Mexico will be sweating on Selection Sunday after the Lobos lost 75-67 to No. 6 Wyoming in the quarterfinals. New Mexico could not find its shooting rhythm against the Cowboys, making only 36 percent of the team’s shots. Wyoming shot 53 percent from both the field and three-point range. Senior guard Brandon Ewing was one of five Wyoming players to score in double figures and led the team with 20 points.
