As the economic downturn starts to hit states hard, New Mexico is slashing its budget to Lobo athletic programs by 10 percent. In response to the cuts, teams will try to book travel plans earlier and attend fewer conferences. State schools will face public scrutiny during the economic recession because they are largely funded by taxpayer dollars. Private institutions likely will also need to trim budgets because donations are smaller and less frequent as people try to weather one of the deepest recessions in decades.
