A North Dakota Sioux tribe voted in favor of the North Dakota Fighting Sioux nickname and logo. North Dakota must prove that the state’s resident Sioux tribes do not disapprove of the university’s Fighting Sioux nickname and Indian head logo before the NCAA will remove the school’s teams from the list of hostile and abusive nicknames. According to the NCAA’s clampdown on hostile and abusive nicknames, offending schools cannot host post-season tournaments and must either receive approval or change the nickname or logo. The members of the Spirit Lake Sioux tribe voted 764-371 in favor of the nickname and logo. However, other tribes in the state must also vote before the Fighting Sioux can move closer to keeping their team name and logo.
