The NCAA has notified Arkansas that the Razorbacks are in danger of losing a scholarship if they don’t improve their ability to keep players eligible and guide them to graduation. The emphasis on academic progress has been in place since 2004, and teams receive points for keeping players eligible each semester and enrolled at the school. If an ineligible player were to transfer from Arkansas, the school could be in danger of dipping below the 925 APR mark, which could lead to a reduction in scholarships. In the Associated Press report, Arkansas’ athletic director expressed his worries about the team’s status.
“We are concerned,” athletic director Jeff Long said. “We haven’t lost a scholarship. We hope that we don’t … but we are going to be in jeopardy.”
The NCAA released its APR figures Wednesday. Long had previously told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that the men’s basketball team could receive a low score because players have left the program and some recent seniors hadn’t yet graduated. The APR measures academic eligibility, retention and graduation.
