NCAA: Rules Committee Approves Three Changes

Starting with the upcoming season, the NCAA will have a more NBA-like feel. The Rules Oversight Panel adopted three rules changes that borrow from ones that the  NBA already has in place regarding charges, free throw shooting after fouls and replays for determining flagrant fouls. The panel established what essentially is a no charge zone underneath the basket. For secondary defenders to draw a charge, the player must set up outside of the area between the front of the rim and front of the backboard.

In another rules change, the panel set a rule that when a player is injured on a foul and cannot shoot the free throw, the team’s coach must choose a free throw shooter from the other four players on the court at the time of the foul. Finally, the panel approved the use of TV replay to determine whether a foul is flagrant, which warrants an ejection.
