According to a UCLA release, an attempt to be patriotic went wrong as sophomore Drew Gordon partially tore a tendon in his right knee at the 2009 USA Basketball Under-19 World Championship Team Trials in Colorado Springs, Colo. The forward returned to Los Angeles for further examination. Needless to say, he won’t be trying out for Team USA this summer anymore.
Gordon played in 34 of 35 games last season and averaged 3.6 points and 3.4 rebounds per game. He also shot a team-best 56.5 percent from the field.
“It is an unfortunate event, but Drew is a resilient kid and he’ll get through it,” UCLA Head Coach Ben Howland said. “We have a good Athletic Training staff and we will be here to support him.”
