According to the Associated Press, the NCAA approved the addition of Simon Fraser, a university in Burnaby, British Columbia, to DIvision II, the first time that the organization has welcomed a team outside the United States into the fold. Simon Fraser’s teams will compete in the Great Northwest Conference and will complete a two-year transition phase.
Simon Fraser’s men’s basketball team finished 14-11 last season. Simon Fraser’s team name is the Clan. Granted, they’re coming from Canada, but that team name might be received poorly in the United States — not to mention running afoul of the NCAA’s “hostile and abusive” nickname policy.
