The attorney for Jefferson County, Ky., said he will not prosecute a sex offense complaint filed by Karen Cunagin Sypher, a woman accused of trying to extort Louisville coach Rick Pitino, according to an Associated Press report.
Sypher is mired in preparation for trial in which she faces extortion charges. A longtime friend, Lester Goetzinger, reached a plea deal with prosecutors in which he agreed to testify against Sypher. According to his attorney, he made phone calls to Pitino on behalf of Sypher in exchange for sexual favors.
In addition, Sypher’s attorney, Thomas Clay, filed to stop representing her in court because of “irreconcilable differences.” Since the whole fiasco started in the spring, Sypher has said she does not feel confident that she’ll receive a fair trial because of Pitino’s popularity in Louisville. Based on the lack of support from her inner circle of friends, she might be right in her negative outlook — though the objectivity of Louisville citizens might not have anything to do with it.
