Seton Hall: Gonzalez Hopes Extension ‘Shuts Everybody Up’

Seton Hall has extended the contract of coach Bobby Gonzalez through 2014-15, according to the Associated Press.

Gonzalez has a 47-46 record at Seton Hall after leading Manhattan to a 127-77 record in seven seasons. The mediocre start to his tenure at Seton Hall has created rumors about his job stability. Gonzalez said he hopes this extension will silence rumors about his impending demise.

“It shuts everybody up, whether it be rival coaches, media and anyone else who wants to put you on the hot seat. I am putting self-induced pressure on myself to get the team and the program to the postseason this year because we haven’t been there yet,” Gonzalez said in a conference call. “The NIT is a lot harder to get into than it used to be, but I won’t be satisfied with the NIT and I am sure the fans won’t be. That’s not what I want for this team. I want this team to go to the NCAA.”

Gonzalez might be able to break through with this year’s Pirates team, which returns four starters and imports several transfers. The top four scorers return, including senior guard Jeremy Hazell, who averaged 22.7 points per game last season.
