Through the first six games, Baylor cruised to easy victories against mostly overmatched opponents.
But in the past five games, the Bears have struggled against better teams, dropping match ups against Gonzaga, Washington State and Florida State. But don’t blame J’mison Morgan.
The UCLA transfer remains a reserve for the Bears, behind Quincy Acy, Perry Jones and Anthony Jones in the frontcourt rotation. But he’s playing much better than he was through the first few games when he was nearly invisible on the court, registering a Total Impact Quotient of 1.4 points, the worst in the Big 12 among centers.
Three weeks later, Morgan’s TIQ is 6.4 points, the biggest improvement of any Big 12 player. Morgan still isn’t a primary scorer on offense, but he’s contributing in other ways. In the past five games, Morgan has 10 offensive rebounds and only two turnovers. During the first six games, he had five offensive rebounds and 11 turnovers. And he continues to be a significant presence at the defensive end, with more than a block per game despite playing only 13 minutes per game.
Unfortunately for the Bears, Morgan’s improvement coincides with a drop in production by Acy, Anthony Jones and LaceDarius Dunn. The Bears’ starters need to play more consistently against good competition as Big 12 play begins, especially because reserves such as Morgan are showing that they are ready to hold down the fort when called upon to give the starters some rest.
