Editors’ note: The Total Impact Quotient is an elaborate ratings formula for players’ performance. It includes strong consideration of a player’s performance relative to the rest of the team. For more information, check out a complete introduction to the TIQ.
What does Kendall Marshall need to do to earn a starting spot at point guard?
The North Carolina freshman has outplayed his more experienced counterpart, junior point guard Larry Drew II, as demonstrated by his Total Impact Quotient of 13.4 points compared to 6.7 points for Drew. Among ACC guards, Marshall is second only to Duke’s Kyrie Irving in his impact on his team.
However, coach Roy Williams is sticking with the more experienced Drew II in the starting lineup, even though the Tar Heels often struggle on offense. Marshall’s excellent TIQ is a product of his solid play off the bench. He has a 2.93 assist-to-turnover ratio (Drew’s is 1.81); he shoots 48.9 percent from the field (Drew shoots 37.7 percent); and he has made 6-of-14 three-point attempts (Drew has made 6 of 28).
The numbers don’t lie: Marshall is playing at a higher level than Drew. The question is whether he could continue to be so effective if he averaged closer to 23 or 24 minutes per game instead of 16 or 17. However, if he started alongside the front line of Tyler Zeller and John Henson, he could possibly be even more effective. North Carolina’s mediocre offense couldn’t suffer if Marshall started a game or two in Drew’s place, at least for a two-week experimental phase.
Here are the latest ratings for the ACC, through games of Saturday Jan. 15. Players average at least about 10 minutes per game.
