Editors’ note: The Total Impact Quotient is an elaborate ratings formula for players’ performance. It includes strong consideration of a player’s performance relative to the rest of the team. For more information, check out a complete introduction to the TIQ.
Texas took out Kansas in Lawrence Saturday by stifling the Jayhawks’ offense, which has been inconsistent during the past month — which happens to coincide with the arrival of superstar recruit Josh Selby.
In Selby’s first game as a Jayhawk, the top recruit entering this season bailed out Kansas against USC with a game-winning three-pointer in the closing seconds. It looked like Selby would fit seamlessly with the rest of the Kansas squad, perhaps making one of the best offenses even better.
But in subsequent weeks, Kansas has struggled, and Selby’s Total Impact Quotient indicates that he isn’t contributing enough on a team with plenty of talent. Of 61 Big 12 guards, Selby ranks No. 59 with a TIQ of 1.0 points per 40 minutes.
How does a player averaging 11.3 points per game, good for third on his team, make an impact of only one point per game? In short, the quantity of shots that Selby needs to score 11.3 points is taking away opportunities from better shooters, and Selby isn’t making enough of an impact in other areas, such as rebounds or assist/turnover ratio.
Selby is the worst shooter of the Jayhawks’ major contributors, shooting 38.1 percent from the field on a team that shoots 51.4 percent collectively. Likewise, Selby is hurting the offense with a team-high 3.1 turnovers per game.
So perhaps it’s not a surprise that Kansas’ offensive efficiency, as measured by Ken Pomeroy, has dipped during the past 10 games. The Jayhawks’ offense exceeded a 110 rating in seven of the team’s first nine games but has done so only four times in Selby’s 10 games.
With options like the Morris brothers, Thomas Robinson and Tyrel Reed, the Jayhawks might be hurting themselves by feeding their highly touted recruit — who hasn’t yet meshed with the rest of the offense.
Here are the latest ratings for the Big 12, through games of Saturday Jan. 22. Players average at least about 10 minutes per game.
