Editors’ note: The Total Impact Quotient is an elaborate ratings formula for players’ performance. It includes strong consideration of a player’s performance relative to the rest of the team. For more information, check out a complete introduction to the TIQ.
Georgia Tech won’t fool anyone into thinking that the Yellow Jackets are an elite team, but the team does have an elite guard in its midst.
Junior Iman Shumpert is playing extraordinarily well this season despite receiving little support from his teammates. Shumpert’s greatest value might be on defense, where he’s averaging nearly three steals per game. His effort at both ends of the court has made him the No. 1 healthy guard in the ACC — second to Duke’s injured Kyrie Irving overall.
With a TIQ of 14.2 points per 40 minutes, Shumpert is contributing to Georgia Tech in every way imaginable. In the past three weeks, he’s hit a new level, highlighted by a triple-double against Virginia Tech. During that span, Shumpert is averaging 19.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 3.6 steals per game while shooting 45.2 percent from the field. All those numbers are impressive, except for maybe his shooting percentage. But when you consider that Shumpert is averaging 40.4 percent for the season, his work during the past few weeks is even more impressive. And then consider that as a team, the Yellow Jackets are barely shooting better than 41 percent.
At 10-12 overall and 3-6 in the ACC, the Yellow Jackets are unlikely to appear in any post-season tournaments. But you can’t blame Shumpert for that. Coach Paul Hewitt must cross his fingers that Shumpert won’t cash on in his stellar play and move to the NBA, which seems like a fairly likely scenario. At 6-5, Shumpert has excellent size for a guard and can play either the point or shooting guard position. HIs Achilles’ heel is his nearly three turnovers per game. But if paired with a reliable point guard, Shumpert could thrive, especially as a defensive stopper off the bench.
Here are the latest ratings for the ACC, through games of Saturday Feb. 5. Players average at least about 10 minutes per game.
