Editors’ note: The Total Impact Quotient is an elaborate ratings formula for players’ performance. It includes strong consideration of a player’s performance relative to the rest of the team. For more information, check out a complete introduction to the TIQ.
For coaches like Kansas’ Bill Self, it’s a challenge to get all the talented players on the roster enough playing time to keep them happy.
That’s an especially good problem to have when injuries arise.
The Jayhawks enter this week with Thomas Robinson recovering from a slight tear in his right meniscus and Josh Selby trying to shake the effects of a stress reaction in his right foot. Since Selby went out, Kansas’ offense has remained on schedule, putting up 103 points against Missouri and 89 points against Iowa State.
However, Selby has little impact on Kansas compared to Robinson. The freshman is undoubtedly talented. But his Total Impact Quotient of 2.0 points per 40 minutes ranks No. 55 among 60 Big 12 guards. He’s a poor shooter, at 41.9 percent from the field, on a team filled with quality shooters. On the other hand, Robinson is an essential reserve for Self’s squad, with a TIQ of 17.6 points per 40 minutes, tops among Big 12 forwards. He takes nothing but good shots, at 62.6 percent from the field, and he works hard to collect rebounds. Robinson averages 8.9 points and 6.4 rebounds in only 15.4 minutes per game.
Without Robinson, Self will rely more heavily on his super talented twins: Markieff and Marcus Morris. The duo stepped up against the Cyclones for 30 points, 22 rebounds, eight assists and four blocks. They’ll likely need to continue to produce at that high level for longer stretches until Robinson returns to health. And they have a good shot at making that happen. Markieff Morris is the No. 3 forward in the Big 12 with a TIQ of 16.0 points per 40 minutes, and his twin is right behind him at 14.0 points per 40 minutes.
In the next couple of weeks, Kansas faces a desperate but horribly inconsistent Kansas States team, then returns home to face Colorado and Oklahoma State. A road game at Oklahoma shouldn’t be too challenging, though the Sooners are improving. The Morris twins and the rest of the Jayhawks should be able to hold down the fort until Robinson and Selby can return to the court at 100 percent health.
Here are the latest ratings for the Big 12, through games of Saturday Feb. 12. Players average at least about 10 minutes per game.
TIQ position averages and total number of Big 12 players at the position:
