Editors’ note: The Total Impact Quotient is an elaborate ratings formula for players’ performance. It takes strong consideration into a player’s performance relative to the rest of the team. For more information, check out a complete introduction to the TIQ.
In the past three weeks, Connecticut has slipped a little after starting 17-2, losing four of the team’s past seven games.
Many people are quick to blame Kemba Walker, whom everyone expects to wear down after a torrid start to the season. But the most recent Total Impact Quotient ratings for Big East players indicate that its Walker’s backcourt mate, Jeremy Lamb, who’s more responsible for the slide.
During the past six games, Lamb’s TIQ has tumbled from a great 11.9 points per 40 minutes, No. 5 among Big East guards, to only 7.3, down to No. 25 at his position. That 4.6-point decline is the biggest of any player in the Big East during the past three weeks.
The bottom line is that Lamb just isn’t having the same impact on games that he had during the Huskies’ first 20. He shot 49.7 percent during the first part of the season; 36.5 percent during the past three weeks. He went from averaging about five rebounds and a steal per game to three rebounds per game and only one steal in six contests. And Lamb’s shot selection is looking worse, too: He’s taking nearly 40 percent of his shots from three-point territory as opposed to 33 percent during the first 20 games. To compound the problem, his free throw rate has dropped from 14 percent to 7 percent.
Despite Lamb’s decline, he’s logging more minutes: 30 per game, a significant increase from the 23 minutes he averaged during the first 20 games. While Lamb appears to be slowing down, Walker has been posting nearly identical numbers during the past few weeks as he did during the first 20 games.
There’s not a compelling argument to support the hypothesis that Walker is wearing down. He’s just facing more great defenses in Big East play that can contain any of the best scorers in the country. On any given a night, Walker could go off for 30 points and shoot better than 50 percent from the field. But that’s harder to do when regularly facing top 25 defenses. On the other hand, Lamb seems to be struggling against nearly everyone right now. And that’s really hurting the Huskies.
Here are the latest ratings for the Big East, through games of Saturday Feb. 19.
